President's Message

Welcome to "Connections" — a monthly publication for you, our members. We have an exciting team of volunteer leadership and staff at Navy League Headquarters. I am here to support YOU and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hurricane Harvey devastated southeast Texas a few weeks ago, causing massive damage and flooding. A week later, Hurricane Irma moved its way through the Caribbean and up into Florida, leaving many homes in ruins. And now Hurricane Maria is threatening areas already devastated by Irma. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the 37 councils with more than 8,000 members in areas affected by the storms. The sea services are an integral part of the whole-of-government approach to recovering from these storms and rebuilding in these areas, so let’s keep working hard to support them.

Alan Kaplan
Navy League National President

Around the Navy League

Greater Austin Council

  • Jeff Hunt, executive director of the Texas Military Forces Museum, shared the important role the Texas Navy played in the creation of the Republic of Texas at the Sept. 7 dinner.
  • The Council is working on spreading the word about veteran suicide prevention. The statics are startling. Surprisingly, it impacts veterans 50 years of age and older as much or more than the younger warriors. We are very early in the stages of determining how best to tackle this issue, but we believe it's a subject that on whicn Navy League councils all over the world can have an impact.

Rocky Mountain Region

America's Strength PresentationRocky Mountain Region President Steve Kelly gave an “America’s Strength” presentation to 16 members of the PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter CB in Boulder, Colo., on Sept. 11. His 30-minute presentation highlighted the roles and missions of the sea services and explained the need for a defense budget that funds readiness, personnel and shipbuilding. The PEO Sisterhood is an international women’s organization focused on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide.

San Diego Council

As part of San Diego Fleet Week, the San Diego Council sponsors the annual Miramar Airshow, where the world-famous U.S Navy Blue Angels fly high above. They are sure to give another thrilling performance. The council will hold a fundraiser during the event. For more information, please see their announcement here.

Corona-Riverside Council

The council is hosting its annual Membership Night on Sept. 22. Every non-member a Navy League member brings will eat for free. It’s a perfect opportunity to introduce friends and family to the Navy League and the benefits of membership.

Central Pennsylvania Council

As part of the Vietnam War's 50th anniversary commemorations, Penn State Univeristy is seeking Navy League volunteers to assist with the Traveling Wall Oct. 5-8. Volunteers will help guide people around the wall, locate names, guide traffic and much more. If you would like to volunteer, please visit their website for more details

U.S. Rep. Garamendi Receives Hirsch Award

Congressman John GaramendiNavy League National President Alan Kaplan and Pacific Central Region President Tom Winant hosted an awards ceremony for U.S. Rep. John Garamendi, D-Calif., on Sept. 15 at the California State Maritime Academy in Vallejo. Garamendi is the 2017 recipient of the Vincent T. Hirsch Award for Outstanding Leadership, which recognizes a distinguished American who has been singularly effective in creating a broader understanding of the importance of the Merchant Marine and maritime industry to national security.

As the ranking member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee, Garamendi has been a staunch supporter of the American mariner. He has introduced multiple bills to strengthen and grow the fleet and has used his platform and membership in numerous caucuses to carry the message to his fellow members of Congress. Attendees included flag officers from the Coast Guard, maritime union leadership and other maritime advocates. Read more about the event here.
